Is the sun damaging your hair

Prolonged exposure of your hair to the sun, can certainly damage the cuticle (it is the strand’s outer covering). This will result in dryness, brittleness, split ends, frizziness and discoloured hair. Damaged and thinning hair gets difficult to manage and additionally, dries off quickly. Since the sun has taken away all the moisture, the hair is deprived and acquires a rougher texture.
If your hair is fine and light-coloured, then it is vulnerable and prone to sun damage. The hair shaft, which is a part of the hair follicle starts to stick out from the skin. The proteins and pigmentation of the hair are grossly degraded leading to protein loss. The hair becomes weaker and looks duller and the scalp becomes susceptible to sunburn due to excessive exposure to the sun and may even lead to skin cancer. Any damage to the scalp will only lead to further thinning.

How does it become worse?

Even as over-exposure to the sun damages the hair, the usage of styling irons and rollers and swimming in chlorinated water in the pools etc. can make matters worse leaving it even more endangered. Since there is no keratin present in the hair, the sun easily penetrates through, resulting in fragile hair strands.
