The foaming and adhesive strengths are derived out of agents such as dimethicone, surfactants like benzalkonium chloride and other plasticisers like aminomethyl propanol. Other components included are silicones and polyglycols, esters of citric and adipic acid and solvents such as ethanol, and isopropanol.

Sometime in the 1920s, hair sprays were developed in Europe and around 1940, the United States developed the aerosol can. It was during this time that the first patents reported the usage of copolymers in hairstyling. The beauty industry at this point ascertained that the aerosol cans, otherwise used to spray insecticides, could indeed be used as a dispenser for hairsprays as well. Soon, around 1964, the highest selling beauty product was the hairspray. Finally, in 1968, protestors objected to the usage of many feminine products including the hairspray. It emerged much later in the 1980s in the glam metal scene.

Certainly, the hairspray contains some really damaging chemical compounds. There are many volatile ingredients found in hairsprays that can have adverse and visible maladies.
